Banavie Swing Bridge Refurbishment

Safety Boat & Working Pontoon – Network Rail

In order for the cabling and control sections to be replaced, Ness Ribs were contracted by Amco Griffin on behalf of Network Rail to supply a temporary pontoon to access to the underside of the swing bridge at Banavie, Fort William. Along with the Versadock modular pontoon we were also asked to provide a safety boat and crew to help manoeuvre the pontoon and to provide waterside safety

Built in 1887 the Banavie Swing bridge carries the West Highland Line across the Caledonian Canal.

In challenging conditions, with winter storms and sub-zero temperatures, we installed a 4m x 4m modular floating pontoon, complete with handrails and a ply covering along with a 3.2m scaffold tower to access both the underside and the sides of the swing bridge. We also supplied a small safety boat with certified crew for the duration of the job.

Working to strict safety guidelines and COVID-19 restriction, not to mention the challenging weather conditions the job was completed safely, on time and in budget.
